The American Visionary Art Museum is one of those places that doesn't mind being called a tacky treasure. It's all about honoring the quirky in all of us, and especially those brave souls who make art outside of the fine art world. The focus of the museum is unschooled artists whose work has been called various things: folk art, visionary art, naive art, primitive art. I find it inspiring to take in the exhibitions at this museum, because everything I see makes me feel like it's okay to be the tacky person that I am.

In addition to its exhibitions on topics such as laughter or hope or happiness, the AVAM sponsors events such as outdoor film showings and workshops on how to make mosaics. There are three major events the museum sponsors that I particularly enjoy:

Kinetic Sculpture Race in Baltimore

Visionary Pets on Parade

Art Car Show and Art Car CARavan/Parade
